MAIA ÉS CSALÁDJA MAGYARORSZÁGON ÉS A VAJDASÁGBAN

Hello Everyone!

This spring/autumn, our family also had the chance to visit Hungary and Vojvodina to spend a few weeks with our loved ones. During these trips, we usually travel with the grandparents so we can spend more time together and get to know the motherland better. This year, we chose to visit the town of Gyula, where we spent four wonderful days. Gyula is a beautiful little town on the Great Hungarian Plain, full of interesting sights and attractions.

We stayed at the Hotel Erzsébet, located in the heart of the town, with a stunning view from our balcony overlooking the 15th-century castle. Visiting the castle from the inside was a real highlight for us—we learned many fascinating details about its history. For example, during the siege of Gyula in 1566, under the leadership of Captain Kerecsényi, the defenders held the castle against the Turks for 63 days.

While there, we also attended a captivating falconry presentation, where we learned about the tradition and practice of falconry and had the chance to observe birds of prey up close. One of these birds, with which we took a photo, was a Harris’s hawk (also known as the red-tailed hawk). The other bird we met was not a bird of prey—it was a long-eared owl, which is quite common in the Gyula area. However, the falconer warned us that small owls can be attacked by birds of prey, so we couldn’t take a photo with both types of birds together.

Another cherished memory from our trip was visiting the Ladics House. This is a bourgeois home built in the early 19th century in Baroque style, donated to the town of Gyula and converted into a museum in 1989. One of the highlights for visitors is the collection of period clothing on display. Of course, we couldn’t resist trying them on—and we did so with great enthusiasm!
