DIASPORA SCHOOL CAMP FOR AUSKOLA STUDENTS FEBRUARY 6–9, 2025 WHATIPŪ, AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND

The camp was as vibrant and special as life itself, with everyone's faces aglow with joy — teachers included — as the sun warmed the dark sands of the west coast. Teachers Erika and Dora led fifteen children on an extraordinary adventure. Andi Gondi, the camp's extraordinary cook, worked tirelessly to satisfy the campers' insatiable appetites, while Ursula and Peter, the caretakers' pride and joy, ensured everything ran like clockwork. The inviting black sand and towering dunes provided a dramatic backdrop to the breathtaking sunsets. The children marveled not only at the scenery but also at the geography of Hungary, every detail of which became etched in their minds. The once-intimidating blank map no longer seemed daunting, and the puzzle pieces of the counties fell into place effortlessly,

accompanied by the catchy tune of "Rosebud of the Rosewood." However, the camp offered more than just academic learning. The "killer" game gave rise to hilarious mock-heroic deaths, and the daily challenges encouraged the children to learn the art of complimenting one another. With Aunt Zoya's help, they created whimsical masks and put on amusing performances in traditional folk costumes. Some campers even showcased their musical talents on the piano. During the Toldi Games, a girls' team emerged victorious in the tug-of-war, while others explored the fascinating crafts of spinning, batik, creating smooth balls, and painting stones. The trampoline was a favorite spot for endless bouncing, while chickens, possums, and mosquitoes became part of the everyday camp experience. Feeding the eels at night was a unique highlight, and the fun of running and catching games seemed never-ending. The evening casino was a hit among campers, turning into a lively hub of excitement, with the Fabatka shop enjoying unprecedented success this year. The final evening was unforgettable, featuring a spirited quiz and raffle that had both children and teachers laughing so hard they were rolling on the floor with tears in their eyes. Saying goodbye was bittersweet, but everyone left with one thought in mind: next year will bring even more fun and memories!
