Kia ora! Join us for a rare evening of Hungarian music, as internationally acclaimed tárogató artist Dr József Terék performs in Auckland for the very first time.
What is the tárogató?
The tárogató is a traditional Hungarian woodwind instrument, officially recognised as a Hungarikum (a national treasure of Hungary).
Its ancestor was a loud, double-reed instrument of Eastern origin. It became famous during Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II's War of Independence (1703–1711), when it sounded on the battlefields, and it has been a symbol of Hungarian freedom ever since.
The modern tárogató was developed in Budapest in the 1890s by instrument maker Vencel József Schunda. It's made of wood and looks a bit like a wooden soprano saxophone. Its warm, rich tone sits somewhere between a clarinet and a saxophone, and it's often called "the voice of the Hungarian soul". As far as we know, it has never been performed live…
